Wholly Misleading Half Truth

It is true that until 1913 income taxes were rare in the US. But what the meme suggests, without saying it, is that the government didn’t need taxes. But there were tariffs, excise taxes (taxing specific goods and activities), property taxes, and even income taxes.

The meme author could claim that it is limited to the federal government, but then why are schools, roads, colleges, and subways included? Those weren’t federal activities.

    • I thought it was just “without taxes we would have none of those things”, which is pretty accurate IMAO – without taxes, we wouldn’t have property rights enforcement or contract enforcement.
