Bad Comparison – Borders within the EU vs. Real Borders

In theory, these are both international borders. But in practice, the Netherlands and Belgium are both members of the EU. Citizens of one have the legal right to work and reside in the other. This is not the case between the US and Mexico.

  1. I’m pretty sure the difference in how America reacts to its neighboring country is the POINT of the meme, not something its author failed to take into account.

    • You’re probably right. Of course, this means there is an unstated assumption that the relationship between the US and Mexico should be similar to the one between two EU countries. That one country should be able to affect the regulatory decisions of the other, that both should allow free immigration, etc. I don’t think either side wants that level of integration.
