Technically speaking, this meme is true. Conservatives, by definition, are typically opposed to change. So you can list the positive changes, say that conservatives opposed them, and make the non-conservatives look wonderful.
However, these changes on the list are all memorable because they had good results and we didn’t revert them. For a realistic picture of history, we need to look at other ideas pushed as part of progress, which we either reversed out of as a society, or which still exist but aren’t very popular.
- Income taxes
- Japanese Internment (under FDR)
- Centralized planning of the economy
- Prevention of airline competition
I’m sure there are plenty of others, but they are not as memorable because they don’t apply anymore (except for the Income Taxes, which by taxing something as difficult to define as income require a lot of administrative overload).
